When is an online business review NOT just a review?
It’s a fact…
There are good contractors to deal with… and of course, there are bad ones…
The good ones do their best to take care of their customers professionally, and do their job in the agreed upon time frame, use quality materials, and at the agreed upon price – all without big surprises.
And if you did have a problem, then they’d get back to you and deal with the problem at hand.
The not so good ones… well they often quote a lowball price, and use subpar materials, aiming to get in and get out as fast as possible.
And if you have a problem with their work – they probably don’t give a rat’s ass, and you’ll probably wait forever for them to even return your call – if ever.
The reality of business and customers
So crap happens in every project, to the good contractors, and the bad ones.
Defective material… bad weather… someone makes a mistake… etc…
But hey, we are all human by the way. And mistakes happen.
It’s the way they handle the problem (or not) that differentiates good contractors and bad ones.
And unfortunately even the good contractors get negatively stereotyped because of the bad behavior of crappy contractors.
Bad reviews
So what happens when a customer’s project goes wrong and they get pissed?
Well too often, and while they’re hot under the collar, people will immediately take to Google or Yelp reviews, or social media, and post a really bad review of that business.
But what they don’t do first – and they absolutely should – is to contact the business and at least give them the chance to rectify the problem.
And the good contractors will take care of any issues.
The downside of bad reviews
But if people automatically go right to posting negative reviews online, then that’s not fair to the business. They don’t even get the chance to rectify the problem.
It’s certainly not fair to a small business because their reputation can be negatively impacted much more than a huge corporation that gets thousands of reviews.
So please keep this in mind before posting negative reviews without giving your contractor (or any company) a chance to fix the problem first.
Of course, there are many times a negative review is definitely warranted.
Just please don’t post it out of spite, and possibly ruin the reputation of a good small local business needlessly.
And just maybe, if you’re pleasantly surprised in the resolution of your issue, you’ll even want to post a glowing review of that business instead.
