Have you checked your home for winter damage?

By Dan and Nick Cox:

Spring is the perfect time to look for home damage caused by winter weather.

So… Now that it’s starting to warm up, it’s a great time to do a thorough inspection of your Maryland home, checking for any winter damage that should be fixed before a small problem becomes a huge one.

That being said, we just want to give you a quick checklist of some common things to look for…

Look for water damage in your cellar or around your foundation.

Broken, missing, or leaking gutters and downspouts won’t divert the water where it’s supposed to go, potentially causing your basement to flood or wash out your precious landscaping.

Damaged or missing siding

Wind can blow off siding in a bad storm, and hail can poke it full of holes. Then water can get in the walls, causing mold, mildew, and eventually rot the sheathing, trim, or sills.

Do your skylights leak?

If you have buckets on the floor to catch skylight leaks, then you already know the amount of damage water can cause to your floor, ceiling, and furniture. We’ve even heard of skylights that weren’t installed properly blowing off the roof from high winds.

Missing, curled, or broken roof materials or shingles

Winds can blow old, loose shingles off the roof. Hail can compromise and damage the shingles, and the damage can be hard to spot. If you had ice dams, they can rip a gutter right off your house, and create leaks inside. Fix any of these issues quickly before they turn into a big, more expensive roof repair.

Old, broken windows

Are your windows hard to open or close? Is there rot or mold on your windows or trim? How about drafts on the cold, windy days? Got broken or cracked glass? Could be the right time for a window checkup or replacement…

So, this isn’t a full home assessment, but a quick inspection checklist so you can look for any potential problems that occurred to your Maryland home over the winter.
