Beware of denied roof repair claims because you don’t have Ordinance or Law coverage

The easiest way to explain this is to give you an example… so here goes…

Let’s say a storm damages your roof, and you need to repair or replace it because of the serious damage.

You call your insurance people, and they say your insurance will cover it… but not all of it.

As part of the repair, you’ll also need to add side wall flashing, drip edge on the whole roof, and use Ice and Water Shield.

Oh yea… and none of that is included in your insurance policy, so you’ll have to pay for that out of your own pocket, which could be several thousand dollars.

Huh??

Come to find out, adding these items (in this case) are mandated by local building codes to be included any time a repair or replacement happens.

And the professional roofer you hired MUST include these items in the repair to adhere to these local and/or state ordinances.

So why are these items not covered?

In a nutshell… Because you don’t have Ordinance or Law coverage on your insurance policy.

You probably don’t have the insurance protection you need!

Your roof will be covered by your policy, but unless you have the Ordinance or Law coverage rider, you’re on the hook for the additional expenses.

An Ordinance or Law coverage rider will cover losses and extra work or materials you incur due to the enforcement of building codes.

Here’s an actual example from an insurance policy…

Ordinance and Law Coverage
Ordinance and Law Coverage

This coverage is pretty important because building codes can significantly increase the cost of repairing or replacing a damaged roof. Plus, these increased costs probably aren’t covered under your typical homeowner’s policy.

And unless you have Ordinance and Law coverage, you’ll have to pay the extra costs for bringing the damaged portion up to code.

What should you do next?

The best thing is to contact your insurance agent, and ask them if you have this extra coverage in your policy.

Or you could look at your policy in detail and see if it’s broken out like in the above example.
