Should You Get Replacement Windows or New-Construction Windows?
By Dan and Nick Cox:
So which is the right window choice for you?
You may not even be aware that when you need to buy windows for your Maryland home, you actually have a choice.
Here’s a quick education on the differences so you can make the right choice.
The primary difference between replacement and new construction windows is a replacement window will replace existing windows in an existing frame, while new-construction windows are installed into a framed hole in the wall, typically in a new house or addition.
Both types of windows can include the various cladding, glass, and hardware options.
Replacement Windows
Replacement windows are generally the best option when you’re simply replacing an existing window where the supporting structure and framing is in good condition. Since there’s no framing to worry about, replacement windows take less time for an installer, and therefore, less expensive overall than new construction windows
They must fit within the existing frame, so you’ll have a little less glass since you’re basically installing a frame within a frame.
There’s also much less disruption to you because there’s not usually just minimal modifications to the walls necessary. The trim, if carefully removed, can often be reinstalled with minimal trouble. Some trim painting is usually needed.
So if you’re replacing an existing window… and there aren’t any other problems with frame rot, insufficient insulation, leaks, flashing, or out of square issues, then replacement windows can save you some money. But if there are known problems, they may not be the best option.
Depending on the age of your house and existing windows, one possible disadvantage of selecting replacement windows is you can’t see the condition of underlying framing or insulation.
Another possible downside is if you use window mounted air conditioners, replacement windows may not be appropriate, or even possible, depending on the size of existing windows.
New-Construction Windows
New-construction designed different than replacement windows because they’re meant to be installed in, for example, a new house, new addition, or if you’re substantially rebuilding a wall.
They are complete window units with jamb and casing, and also nailing flanges or fins around the edges to attach them to the wall, and will be installed in an empty, studded frame.
However, they can definitely be used to replace existing windows if you want to tear out existing windows down to the studs to let you examine the insulation or structural integrity.
It’s just a lot more time, labor costs, and money, and they have to be sized correctly to fit in the existing opening.
But the advantage of doing this is it almost guarantees they’ll be much more energy efficient because it can eliminate drafts and leaks from around the window.
Bottom line:
Everyone’s situation is different.
Replacement windows can only be used to replace existing windows, and is the lower cost option.
New-construction windows are always installed in new houses or additions, and can be used to replace existing windows with the above considerations, but it will be a higher cost option.
If you’re looking for the lowest cost option, then replacement windows will probably be a better choice for you.
If you want the best possible, highest quality window solution, then new-construction windows might be your choice.
